Rakeem Cato Puts Marshall University’s Thundering Herd On the Map in Canada

Raheem Cato, a last minute decision, got the nod from Head Coach Tom Higgins to be his starting quarterback against the defending Grey Cup Champions, Calgary Stampeders. With the spotlight on the visiting champions, Cato, one of 2 of my most favorite quarterbacks in the Canadian Football League didn’t disappoint. More on my other favorite quarterback Zach Collaros, a former alumni of my Steubenville Big Red in Steubenville, Ohio will be featured in my next blog. However, today belongs to Raheem. He completed 80 percent of his passes (20 of 25) and threw 3 touchdown passes, dismantling the Calgary Stampeder defense to lead the Montreal Alouettes to their first win of this young season. Cato attempted and completed a variety of pass routes to receivers that he threw open during several critical plays throughout the game.

His play was impressive because he didn’t suit up in Week 1. The former Thundering Herd great didn’t even attempt a pass until his debut against the defending Grey Cup Champions last night.

Cato fell into the hands of the Alouettes after he failed to impress Cleveland Brown hopefuls during a free agent tryout this past May. The Browns’ coaching staff weren’t impressed enough to offer the undersize quarterback a contract. Instead, he signed a two-year deal with Montreal on May 16.

Raheem has made the proud Herd Nation even prouder by putting Marshall University‘s Thundering Herd on the Canadian map.

Thank you Raheem. You have still persevered Against All Odds.
